Maryland DJS is seeking an experienced and dynamic communications professional to lead the Department’s internal and external communications efforts. DJS’ Communications Director manages all agency communications in support of DJS’ mission to transform young people’s lives, create safer communities, and forge more equitable systems through community-based partnerships that hold youth accountable while building on their strengths and support systems.
The Director of Communications oversees the flow of communication and information between the Department and its staff, key stakeholders and the public. The main duties involve developing and implementing an effective communications strategy in support of the Department’s goals.
Other duties and responsibilities include:
- Managing a team of communications staff;
- Overseeing the creation of informative materials to support the Department’s internal and external communications strategies;
- Working with all forms of media, including press releases and digital campaigns, print materials, social media, audio and video and more;
- Responding to crises or challenging situations quickly and professionally;
- Ensuring that all inquiries to the Department are responded to in a timely fashion and that the information distributed to the public is accurate and up to date. This includes all media requests, public information act requests, press releases, brochures, newsletters, intranet and website postings;
- Conducting quality control on all communications and materials, ensuring high quality, consistent and positive messaging and branding;
- Developing and maintaining effective working relationships with key media outlets;
- Being available 24-hours a day 7-days a week to respond to emergencies and guide/assist with the development of statements made to the media, public and DJS staff statewide and ensure timely posting by the agency webmaster;
- Coordinating a monthly newsletter which is internally published and circulated to all DJS staff and key stakeholders.
This position is based in downtown Baltimore with the opportunity for a partial hybrid work schedule.
