Juvenile Law Center Youth Advocates Release Broken Promises: Futures Denied

Today, youth advocates from Juvenile Law Center announced the release of Broken Promises: Futures Denied, a second edition of the report they issued in December 2018 entitled Broken Bridges . Both reports share young people’s accounts of the harms they experienced in juvenile detention and institutional placements, and offer solutions for change to policymakers and the public.
“The release of Broken Promises: Futures Denied, the second edition of Broken Bridges comes at a time when policy makers and legislators desperately need to understand the experiences of system impacted children to influence and push for transformative change to the both the juvenile legal system and the child welfare system,” said Cathy Moffa, Youth Advocacy Senior Program Manager.” Our children, particularly those children who have already been marginalized, deserve better, and it is our responsibility as advocates to center their voices and experience to push for change.”
“Broken Promises, Futures Denied was created to inform people of the wrongdoings youth were exposed to whether it was a group home, foster home or placement facility,” said Anahi Figueroa-Martinez, Juvenile Law Center Youth Advocate. “In our new publication we added more issues that we didn’t get to touch on the first edition. We gathered both current youth advocates of the program and alumni of the program to talk about their experiences. Some people wrote stories and some wanted to show their experiences through art.”
